Diary 2007 16th January 2007
Well, winter is truly with us! The rain is coming down in buckets and are glad we bought the kayaks during the summer. They are really handy for getting to the car!
The shop is now closed until Easter and we are busy with alterations (again!). The plans have been passed for a new extension to the shop and we are now waiting for a Building Warrant which should be with us by the end of February. We will then have four weeks in which to build and be ready for the start of the season - no problem!! |

8th March 2007
After the 'Cyclonic' gales (weather forecasters words) of the weekend, we thought it might be a good idea to do some 'beachcombing'. We had a good scour along the Baugh/Crossapol coastline and found lots of interesting bits of driftwood along with some much larger pieces. Click on this YOU TUBE link to see one of the items we collected - we just managed to balance this in the back of the car but unfortunatly Jane drew the short straw and had to sit on it to stop it sliding out!
P.S. No Building Warrant yet! |

22nd April 2007
At last, we now have the Building Warrant and the extension is well on its way (photos below). We have enjoyed some great weather lately which has allowed us to construct and erect the shell and make it water tight. One thing we have found whilst building the house and doing other building projects, is that living on a remote island, there is a need to be well organised when it comes to ordering and buying materials. There are no B&Q's on Tiree and if you run out of anything - even the smallest of items, you can be held up for days waiting for a shipment from the mainland. Luckily it hasn't happen too many times and hopefully this is our last 'building project' for some time. |

Tiree's community website has been re-designed by our local website expert Colin Woodcock of Blue Beyond. Check it out at www.isleoftiree.com. It has lots of useful information about the island including history, heritage, accommodation and new interactive maps.
There is also a new network of touchscreen terminals located at the Co-op and the CalMac office in Scarinish, the Rural Centre, the Airport and the Business Centre in Crossapol, and the Hynish Centre. The touchscreen at the Co-op is activated from outside through the glass window and is available all day every day whatever the weather. The other screens are inside and can be used during the normal opening times of the organisations who have kindly agreed to have a screen located in their building.

22nd June 2007
As you can see from the photo, the extension to the shop is now finished and open. It is nice to give the frames, mirrors and clocks the hanging space they deserve.
The weather on Tiree this month has been superb. The last wet and windy day was on Saturday 2nd June. Since then we have virtually had sunshine every day - some days, 16 hours of it! No doubt we will pay for it later in the season!

29th June 2007
Well, the good weather that we have had over the last couple of months on Tiree has ensured that the island's reputation as being the sunniest place in Britain is retained. Tiree was named as being the sunniest location in the UK for five of the six weeks between 5th May and 16th June. In the first 12 days of this month, Tiree enjoyed 132 hours of sunshine (averaging 11 hours of sun per day!!), whilst Aberdeen had only 17 hours. This week has been rather mixed but we still haven't had much rain. Lets hope it stays dry on Tiree tomorrow for the wedding of Hannah and Angus John.

24th July 2007
Meet Annie and Jock - mother and son.
The island turned out in force to watch these majestic gentle giants demonstrate their strength and grace in the 'old' tradition of ploughing. Once equipped in their regalia, these magnificent animals were set to task, the results of which can be seen here. Their sheer size and strength was a joy to watch and we were captivated by their lack of concern with the close proximity of the crowd and their accompanying noise. They were expertly and tenderly driven with a quiet command only given to set them on their way. A truly magnificent spectacle of a sadly missed tradition and a day many of us will remember for a long time. | |

It was 10.00pm last night when we looked out of the bedroom window and saw this view. Thought we would share it with you. Thinking of you Bev!! |

28th October 2007
Christmas presents sorted!!
After a wild day on Tiree and a high tide, I was itching to get out and do some beachcombing. With the wind abating and the cloud clearing I said my usual goodbye and armed with my mobile (in case of an emergency) and my trusty rucksack (already packed and ready to go) I was off.
Spoilt for choice, and still not quite certain on the weather, I decided to go to one of my favourite beaches (secret!), not too far away, and always good for the old flotsam and jetsam.
As you can see from the photo below, I managed to start my Christmas shopping early this year. Stephen is sorted with a pair of flipflops and a can of lager (sell by date of July 2008), Chloe has a tennis ball to go with the half dozen I have already found this year (she's partial to a game of tennis especially around Wimbledon time) and there are a couple of fishing floats for Christopher to go with the half rod I found last year! Oh yes and some interesting bits of wood for me and, of course, the beautiful scenery, fresh air, exercise, peace and quiet! Bliss. |
